BETWEEN THE SHOWS BY TINA BARRY

Between the Shows: December 19, 2008

Editor's Note: Some of our sponsor companies prefer to keep their children's businesses out of the national and regional wholesale trade show circuits (or at least not attend all the shows every season). So to keep you abreast of collections you won't find (or find infrequently) in trade venues, we've started this new column. We think you'll like our "Between the Shows" reviews as much as you've told us you enjoy our "Trade Show Reports" coverage.

PINK PEWTER

Homebase: Streamwood, IL

DESIGNER: Mireya Villarreal

Sizes: 6 years through adults (18+); Wholesale prices: $4.50-$20

Sometimes a collection comes along with a strong, unique aesthetic all its own. That's the case with the children's hair accessories at Pink Pewter. Designer Villarreal taps into a jewel case of glitz, Swarovski crystals, silk flowers, and beads, and what could be an over-the-top creation in the hands of a designer with a less evolved sensibility, becomes rich, deeply textured ornaments that one might find tucked away in an antique costume shop.

"The inspiration with this line was to provide expensive sumptuous looking pieces at a reasonable price. That is why we chose to add so many embellishments on this season's ornaments," says Villarreal.

Two especially lovely pieces for fall are the Amanda and the Nicole. "Gold is fantastic for fall or any season, and it's great to accessorize with because it's neutral. Both of these designs feature elaborate stitching and beading to give them the luxe look and high quality our clients have come to expect," she says.

The sequined-heavy floral-shaped Amanda is stunning with any out-on-the-town garment and equally impressive as an eye-catching ornament to complement a casual outfit.

"Rich colors are hot for fall," says Villarreal, and the deeply hued, butterfly shaped Nicole (available in fuchsia and purple) is about as hot as one can handle. The mix of deep plum tones and the scattering of beads and floral embellishments on the band, make the accessory more art than ornament.

POSITIVELY ORGANIC

Homebase: New York, NY

DESIGNER: Nancy Possenti

Sizes: NB to 6 years; Wholesale prices: $9-$19

Since its inception in 2005, designer Nancy Possenti, and co-owner Peter Possenti, have had a positive response to their children's wear organic collection "made by socially responsible manufacturers in India, who produce clothing using hand-picked certified organic cotton, low impact dyes, and eco-friendly screen printing," says Possenti.

For Spring/Summer 2009, Possenti's collections "celebrate the magic and adventure of summertime fun." Both the Whirly Girl and the boys' Beach Boy lines are "inspired by sunshine, blue skies and the wonder of nature."

Whirly Girl is "fun, feminine and ultra-comfy!  Signature pieces include adorable ruffle bloomers, capris and short shorts that coordinate with fluttery sleeved bodysuits and tops, a sporty terry hoodie and skirt set, and the signature Whirly Girl Dress in new bold raspberry," says Possenti.

Shown here are the deliciously colored Ruffled Bloomer outfits with lovely floral motifs that are sweetened further with the ruffle-trimmed bloomers.

A sprinkle of paprika adds some heat to the earthy spice-colored Beach Boy palette. "Our gorgeous man-tailored shirts are back with very cool animal graphics that coordinate with retro-styled shorts."
