ON THE INSIDE WITH TINA BARRY

Fall 2010: We Are the World - And Every Style In It at Children's Club

There are some seasons when a single theme is prevalent. One season the theme was Russian stacking dolls; another season designers made the Javits Center look like a commune with tie-dyed garments, embroidered pieces, and every incarnation of the peace symbol; and then there were times when everything looked as if it had been plucked from a museum gift shop: subdued and streamlined. Fall 2010 at the ENK Children's Club was like "Sybil." A lot of themes emerged.

From some designers, there were clean, elegant wares in soft neutrals. Others worked a grunge aesthetic. Some employed a strong glam rock mood, and other booths were as much a craft show as a garment exhibit with hand embroidery and beading. Boys went back to the land, drove motorcycles, and donned argyles and classic sweaters right out of "Masterpiece Theatre."

You may not appreciate all the trends, but there's something out there for everyone to love. And if the colors don't rock your world, then you're burnt out. Book a vacation immediately.

THERE WILL BE:

Shirtwaists. The crisp, tailored piece appeared in classic collections and funkier lines. Look for it in fine, baby corduroy; ultra-light, loosely woven, reversible plaids/checks; glittery plaids; washed denim; and lightweight knits.

Off Anna Sui's ready to wear for Fall 2010 New York Tent Show runway came this plaid shirtwaist style dress.

Ses Petite Mains' shirtwaist works several trends: The flirty shape, plaid with a touch of glitter, and a tuxedo-style front detail.

Another plaid shirtwaist from Le Fromage et L'Orange mixes prints with the season's hot purple/plum hues.

Look for shirts and shirtwaists with close-to-the-body fit and Western details: pointy collars, color-trimmed plackets, snap closures.

Chatti Patti blends classic shirtwaist styling with a touch of the Old West in this whimsical piece.

Narrow pants. Lean jeans, leggings that look like denim, styles with horizontal folds, and cargo pants without bulk.

Dropped waists on tunics and dresses.

This elegant number from Dolls & Divas blends the charm of a schoolgirl's dress with sophisticated textiles (the bodice has a touch of glitter) and a stunning color combination. It's lovely.

Ruffles everywhere.

A three-quarter-length sleeve on jackets and coats with a knit piece underneath that extends from elbow to wrist. A layered look without the layers.

Grace Kelly meets Twiggy in Imoga's chic yet funky fur-lined coat with coordinating minky scarf.

Motorcycle jackets and pieces with motorcycle shapes and military details.

Agnes B's distressed leather motorcycle jacket from her Fall 2010 runway collection.

A swanky little piece from 3 Pommes.

Tie-dyes, sequins - glam rock lives on.

Sequins add glamour to dresswear and casual pieces such as cotton cardigans.

Marc Jacobs' Fall 2010 sheath offers plenty of sparkle.

A light hand with sequins from Kanya (formerly Cherise).

THERE WILL BE:

Thrill-inducing colors. The deepest, richest plums and purples. A blue so electric it'll make your fingers tingle. Storm cloud gray. Leaf green and yellow green swiped from Matisse's palette. Deep red and dark pinks like overblown roses in June.

Isaac Mizrahi's deep, autumnal tones for Fall 2010.

Digging those purples at Betsy Johnson. Childrenswear designers used the yellow green tone of Johnson's boots to spark deep hued palettes.

French collection Ideo digs deep for the lushest vegetables tones.

Stun's stunning plum, fuchsia and pumpkin palette.

Mulberribush's Love You Lots playful styles offer a rainbow of rich tones and whimsical design details.

Combinations of saturated hues with dark neutrals: electric blue with charcoal, black or taupe.

Electric blue adds a bolt of hot color to Anna Sui's plaid suit.

Dutch collection Carbone turns the switch on.

Taupe and electric blue make a beautiful pair at Lili Gaufrette.

Several designers said navy was selling well.

Rose, dusty teal and gray.

The classic black and white combination looks fresh, but so does black, white, gray and red.

Plaid goes glam in a sophisticated belted trench lined with a bold, glittery gray and red stripe. From Ses Petites Mains.
