BOYS' COLLECTIONS: MONSTER REPUBLIC Homebase: Los Angeles, CA DESIGNER: Albert Lee Sizes: 2T to 20; Wholesale prices: $12-$28 One thing I can say about Lee is he's clever. He knows that the cross and bones motif and skulls are still popular, but he's got to approach them in a new way to keep the images fresh. He's up to the challenge.
Outstanding pieces: Look closely. What you see is more than T-shirts and board shorts. The company's skull logo blends naturally into the wave graphic on the red T-shirt on the left. What looks like bright orange chess pieces on the T-shirt on the right are skulls, and that is no ordinary Hawaiian print on the shorts. Outstanding pieces: The print on the garment on the left offers a hint of vintage nostalgia while the easy cut and gorgeous rosettes make it timely. The blue dress goes to an early evening affair with a rich, inky color, lush "textured glaze" fabric, and tunic styling given glamour with square silver rhinestones. Outstanding piece: Here's an example of her style: A playful check on an intentionally wrinkled cloth, cut generously then reined in with a ruffle-edged collar and a bodice outlined in sequin-speckled flowers.
