REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK BY TINA BARRY

May 2008

Editor's Note: Our Reporter's Notebook column is a regular feature to keep retailers and buyers up to date with our sponsors' news.

APPAREL:

A bouquet of flowers is always a welcome gift. If those "flowers" bloom into wearable items, well, all the better. That's the thinking behind THE BABY BUNCH, a company that specializes in bouquet like arrangements of cotton tees, hats and socks. To welcome new babies this spring, the company is launching the Primary Bucket Bunch featuring a 100 percent cotton bib, T-shirt, hat, two pairs of socks, a one-piece and a pair of leggings all colored in bright primary hues. (Retail price $49.95, fits NB to 6 months or up to 16 pounds.) The Organic Baby Bunch received an Innovation Award from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). To place an order, log on to www.babybunch.com.

Leggings make a great add-on sale. Make those leggings lace and you've got a leg up on the competition. Lacylegs by BABYCAKES OF SCOTTSDALE are knit from a lightweight blend of poly and cotton for softness and flexibility. The slight sheen of the tone-on-tone knit looks especially elegant (fits sizes 1 to 8, available in white, charcoal, light and dark pink and black.) To order, call 888 302-BABY (2229) or log on to www.babycakesscottsdale.com.

Brinda Devine likes chatting with her customers. To keep the conversation going, the owner of BABY DEVINE now features a multimedia page on her website "where Baby Devine customers and visitors (and, hopefully, new friends) can converge to discuss topics important to parents, add photos and videos," says Devine. If you want to chat, log on to www.babydevine.com.

Fans of BLOOMERS BABY can have their cake - and more. The company that put the multi-tiered, flower strewn T-shirt "cake" on the market, now offers The Birth Day Box. Inside a sophisticated box is a three-piece, combed cotton hat, long-sleeve lap tee accented with plush trim and a matching plush diaper cover. Fabulous touches like a tiny footprint that adorns the back of each tee, soft satin detailing and cozy flannel lining will make the set a cherished gift. ($34, fits sizes NB to six months. Available in pink, blue or white.) To order, call 949-951-2063 or visit www.bloomersbaby.com.

Susan Skeels of FINGERPRINTS, a collection of sweaters and giftwear, has added terry lined waffle weave hooded bathrobes to her offerings. The garments, available in pink or blue ($14-$16, fits 12 months to 4 years), "work for bathrobes and are great for the beach or poolside," says Skeels. The items monogram easily. To order, contact Skeels at 845 268-3527 or visit jamesgirone.com/fingerprints.

Designer and founder Michele Uzbay of GRANDMA NES reports that clients are loving her new outfits. "We're selling more coordinating sets than before," she says, "in lots of different fabrications like rayon, suede, and mixed cotton blends. There's lots of new pattern, too." (Uzbay's outfits sell for $20-$30 and fit sizes 3 months to 6 years.) For a peek at the new goods, log on to www.grandmanes.com.

The need for infantwear without harsh toxins, chemical bleaches and dyes has made organic items a must-have in the kids' industry. To meet the demand, long time manufacturer KISSY KISSY has introduced the new Organic Sheep collection of 100 percent organic Pima cotton pieces. "We've always used Pima cotton. The added benefit of organically grown cotton doesn't take away from the trademark softness of Kissy Kissy layette, ensuring that the material that touches baby's skin is soft and pure," says Roxana Castillo, the company's president and owner. The new Organic Sheep line (sizes 18-24 months) includes a hat, blanket, playsuit, bib, gown and more, in a natural ecru color. For more information, log on to www.kisskissyonline.com.

For MIM-PI's Summer 2008 collection, the company is offering a special group adorned with lovely crocheted flowers, butterflies and hearts that are handcrafted by a women's collective in Ludhiana, India. The work allows expecting women and new mothers who are still breastfeeding to stay home instead of working abroad. To see the collection, log on to www.Mim-Pi.com.

Retailers smitten with the NEIGE collection have something to cheer about. Designer Adrienne Catrina now offers sweaters and jeans with a similar understated, subtly vintage aesthetic as her much loved dresses and separates. The sweaters, knit from a cashmere and wool blend ($47, fit girls and boys 12 months to 12 years) are available in an array of deep neutral and plum tones. The adjustable waist pants ($37), in softly washed dark indigo blue denim, are cut in a comfortable trouser shape for easy movement. To order, log on to www.neigeclothing.com.

Elizabeth Falkner, the designer and president of MARIPOSA DESIGNS, has launched Snuggle Sets a collection made from baby rib and cotton velour fabrics (retails for $12.50 to $50). Each kangaroo-pocketed lap-collar tee and wide leg pant is available in three colorways that coordinate to three prints in the line. "It's very exciting to add a new look to our collection but also something that makes perfect sense with our brand identity," says Falkner. "Combined with our packaging ensemble, these sets are an easy offering for retailers looking for ready-to-gift items." For additional information, log on to www.mariposababy.com.

Ponder this. Cofounder Christy Vogt is introducing PONDUR, a collection of 100 percent certified organic cotton layette wear. The name is pronounced "ponder" and is meant to make consumers "think deeper and realize that their possibilities are endless when they take time to ponder what they really want to do with their lives." To that end, the collection of tees and creepers are printed with messages such as "my footprints may be small but my dreams are big," and "take care of me….take care of the world." Celebrity parents Tori Spelling, Samantha Harris, Jason Priestly and Scott Baio are already fans of the line (NB to 18 months, $22). A percentage of all sales go to help match children on a waiting list for a big brother or sister and also to clothe, feed and inspire kids affected with HIV/AIDS. For more information, contact Vogt at 404 223-3436 or visit www.pondur.com.

For the first time, POSITIVELY ORGANIC is offering gender-specific collections of their certified organic, fair trade goods. The company's new Whirly Girl collection of skirts, dresses and tops are thoughtfully finished with scalloped edging and lace accents and come in rich, vibrant colors. The new Beach Boy line of shorts, man-tailored shirts and tees keeps boys chic with a hint of retro-styling. (Both lines are priced from $14-$19, fit 6 months to 6 years.) For more information, call 877-863-0614 or visit www.positively-organic.com.

It's TEA time big time! The company has just introduced their first organic layette collection, available in a pearl pink or sky blue pattern inspired by Japanese textiles. "It is important to us that our layette knits are made of a natural-fiber fabric that is pesticide and fertilizer free. We are dedicated to creating organic styles that are high-quality, beautiful, good for the baby and the environment," says Emily Meyer, the company's co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. For Summer 2008, Meyer is introducing Bold Batiks a collection of brightly colored separates influenced by a trip to West Africa. Look for dramatic stripes, rich batiks and high-impact patterns. (The collection fits 12 months to 8 years.) www.teacollection.com.

Melissa and Trent Nash at the retro-inspired KNUCKLEHEADS CLOTHING and its sister line HULA MULA will debut their first Holiday collection at Winter 2008 trade shows. "This new collection is edgy, with a lot of reds and blacks," says Melissa. "We wanted to create a new line that would stand out by mixing textiles and strong colors." Both collections boast additions of houndstooth and denim staples. "The only crimes our Burglar Stripe Romper and Ruffled Jail Dress can be accountable for is stealing the show," Melissa says. For more information, call 360-696-9744, or visit www.knuckleheadsclothing.com.

To celebrate, she's introducing a new collection of organic Comfort Wear that features vintage alphabet card patterns in earthy tones ($10.50-$12). Look for the addition of baby gifts such as pails covered with fabric that hold a matching bib and set of burpies ($16.50 and up). "What makes this line unique," says Simmons, "is that that the retailer can customize the product by choosing from over a dozen fabric patterns that we offer." Salyer launched No Slippy Headbands ($4.50-$8 wholesale, fits preemies to big girls) at the ENK Children's Club in March, and, she says, "We had a fantastic response from retailers all over the country." The accessories employ European elastics and trims, and feature the company's signature Swiss velvet lining.
