The Stork Brought a Baby - and a Briefcase Parents of newborns expect sleepless nights and a house full of cooing relatives. What they don't anticipate is the bundle of paperwork that arrives with the bundle of joy. Says Tamar Shay, a mom and inventor of BabyBriefcaseTM, "Expectant parents seldom realize the avalanche of documents they'll bring home and accumulate in the first year." Her solution? BabyBriefcaseTM, a baby paperwork organizer that helps new moms categorize the important papers, and a few, like a gift tracker, that no one thinks of but wishes they had when it's time to send a thank you note for the silver rattle. This baby document filing system is based on hundreds of hours of interviews and hands-on testing by new and experienced moms. It is utility patent pending. "A new or experienced mom can throw everything into a cardboard box and hope for the best, or she can choose to make storing her child's vital documents a lot more fun and still be totally practical," says Shay. The BabyBriefcaseTM is a frosted plastic carrying case with a sturdy click-and-snap closure. Inside are 15 folders - six pre-labeled and nine blank in soft, gender-neutral colors of periwinkle, mint, and peach. Additionally, there are 20-plus preprinted and customizable folder categories, a thank you note tracker, two baby wallet info cards, a framed photo pocket, and a pen slot. The year-old company has graduated from Shay's dining room table to manufacturing in China. "I speak their language," says Shay, a Harvard alumna who speaks seven languages including Mandarin and Cantonese. "The greatest gift to a new mom is peace of mind. If I can help her become more organized and conquer the chaotic 'daze' of early motherhood, then I've made a tiny contribution to the world," says Shay. BabyBriefcaseTM has already received good consumer and trade press including the Boston Globe, Earnshaw's, Children's Business, and Gift Beat.
