TJX Companies Reports Fiscal 2002 Year-End
Results
(Framingham, MA) The TJX
Companies, Inc., the leading off-price retailer of
apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and worldwide,
today announced sales and earnings results for the fiscal
year and fourth quarter ended January 26, 2002. Net sales
for fiscal 2002 reached $10.7 billion, up 12% over the
previous year and consolidated comparable store sales
increased 3%.

Confidence Index Slips in
February

Board's Consumer Confidence Index, which had been on the
rise since December, lost ground in February. The Index
now stands at 94.1 (1985=100), down from 97.8 in January.
The Present Situation Index declined from 98.1 to 94.8.
The Expectations Index fell from 97.6 to
93.6.

Company, Inc. today reported that earnings from
continuing operations, before the effects of
non-comparable items, were $0.35 per share in the fourth
quarter, and $0.39 per share for the year, exceeding both
management and analysts' expectations. This compares with
losses of $0.18 and $0.44 per share in last year's
respective periods. Including the effects of non-
comparable items in both years, the Company recorded
earnings from continuing operations of $0.32 per share in
both this year's fourth quarter and year, compared with
losses of $1.26 and $2.29 per share, for last year's
respective periods.

Retailers Kick Off 2002 with "Surprise" Sales

have experienced a better than expected start to the
year, with many merchants ringing up higher sales during
the first seven weeks of 2002 than the comparable period
a year ago.

E-Commerce Sales in Fourth Quarter 2001 Were $10 Billion,
Up 13.1 Percent from Fourth Quarter 2000, Census Bureau
Reports
(Washington; Feb. 21, 2002) The
Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced
today that the estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales
for the fourth quarter of 2001, not adjusted for
seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, was
$10.043 billion, an increase of 13.1 percent (±4.1%)
from the fourth quarter of 2000. Total retail sales for
the fourth quarter of 2001 were estimated at $860.8
billion, an increase of 5.3 percent (±0.6%) from the
same period a year ago.
- Cherokee
Inc. Extends Retail License Agreement with
Zellers
(Van Nuys, CA) Cherokee Inc., a
leading global licensor of brand name apparel, footwear
and accessories, announced that it has extended its
agreement for its Cherokee brand in Canada for an
additional five years with Zellers, a division of

Reports Record Sales and Earnings for Quarter and
Year
(Bentonville, AR) Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc. reported record earnings and sales for the
quarter ended Jan. 31, 2002. Net income for the quarter
was $2.189 billion, up from $2.004 billion for the
similar prior year quarter. Earnings per share were $0.49
up 8.9 percent from the $0.45 per share reported in the
same prior year quarter. Total sales were $64.211
billion, an increase of 13.5 percent over the similar
prior year quarter.
- Sears
Expects $40 Million Charge for Sears Canada Eatons
Conversions
(Hoffman Estates, IL) Sears,
Roebuck and Co. expects to record a one-time charge of
approximately $40 million, or $0.12 per share, as a
result of the decision to convert its Canadian
subsidiary's seven Eatons stores to Sears stores. Sears
plans to record the charge in the first quarter of 2002.

Are Having More Children, New Report Shows; U.S. Births
Increased 3% in 2000
(Hyattsville, MD) Women in the
United States are having more children than at any time
in almost 30 years, according to the latest Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) birth statistics
released today by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson.
At the same time, Secretary Thompson said that births to
teens continue to decline.

Reports Strong January Sales and Year-End

Gymboree Corporation today reported sales of $35.2
million for the four weeks ended February 2, 2002,
compared to the $38.2 million in sales reported for the
five weeks ended February 3, 2001. Last year's reported
sales for this period included $8.1 million in sales
related to the additional week of the period and $0.9
million in sales related to Zutopia, a division that was
sold in March 2001. Comparable store sales for the
four-week period increased 20.0% over the same four-week
period last year.

$10,731 million, an increase of 12% over last year's
$9,592 million. Consolidated comparable store sales for
the four week period ended February 2, 2002 were up 4%
